Mervyn William Bradshaw DFC was born on February 28, 1923, in Winnipeg, Manitoba (MB), the son of Mr. and Mrs. Seth Bradshaw. On October 24, 1941, Bradshaw enlisted in the RCAF at Vancouver BC. He received air crew instruction at various training schools in Canada and graduated from No. 5 Air Operations School on November 6, 1942 and arrived in the U.K. later that month. He received more training and was posted to 420 Squadron on March 26, 1943.By September 28, 1943, he had completed 35 dangerous and risky sorties over enemy territory. From June 2nd, 1943 to October 23, 1943 he was stationed with his squadron in North Africa. He was commissioned as a Warrant Officer, December 6, 1943 and was on leave in Canada, from May 27th to July 20th, 1944. By August 28, 1944, Bradshaw was with 138 Squadron. Before he returned to Canada, in June 1945, he had completed 55 danger-filled sorties (two tours) over enemy territory and heavily defended targets. Flying Officer Bradshaw was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) effective September 8, 1945. The citation referred to his skill, leadership ability and bravery in carrying out 55 danger-filled sorties. |
