Andrew Sydney Dawes MC BSc was born in Lachine, Québec, son of James P. Dawes and Gertrude J. (Brock) Dawes. He was educated at McGill University, Montreal where he received his BSc. degree in 1910. On the declaration of War in 1914, he enlisted in the Canadian Field Artillery, going to France in May 1915. He was twice wounded and promoted to Captain in 1917. Dawes was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for conspicuous gallantry on July 3rd 1918.The citation reads as follows: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as Forward Observation Officer during an attack. When the attack went forward he found it impossible to observe or to keep his line working. He therefore went forward with the infantry attack and was able to send back valuable information throughout the day across a continuously shelled area. He displayed great coolness, courage, and initiative and his work was of the utmost value.In March 1915, Dawes was promoted to Major, attached to the 55th Battery. On demobilization, he rejoined the Atlas Construction Co. Limited and rose to become President and Managing Director of the company. He also held senior executive positions with Belmont Construction Co., Windsor Mills Flying Training Schools Ltd., Federal Aircraft Limited, Montreal Heat & Power Consolidated, Beauharnois Power Corp. Ltd. and Reliance Insurance Co. of Canada. |
