George Francis Grant DSO(2) DFC was born at Ottawa Ontario, son of George S. Grant, a construction contractor in Ottawa, and Mrs. Grant. He was educated at Lisgar Collegiate in Ottawa and in April 1939 traveled overseas where he enrolled in the Royal Air Force (RAF).

On March 13, 1942 while attached to No. 109 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Grant had successfully completed 33 dangerous and risky missions many of which were bombing raids over enemy occupied territory, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).

By 24 March 1944 Wing Commander Grant had successfully completed 100 missions, many of which were dangerous and death defying missions against heavily defended targets and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO).

His citation referred to his courage, tenacity and fortitude being amply demonstrated on the occasion when he attacked Bochum in the face of difficult circumstances.

Effective 11 May 1945 Group Captain Grant was awarded a second DSO in recognition of his outstanding efforts while in command of No. 109 Squadron for the past 10 months.

During his WW2 service Group Captain Grant married a lady from the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. He had three brothers who also served during WW2, namely; Captain William G. Grant, Captain John S. Grant and Flying Officer Robert A. Grant in the RCAF.
